FSA issues recall for tofu linked to Bacillus Cereus

The UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued a second updated alert on two varieties of tofu due to Bacillus Cereus.

Koon Yick Wah Kee rose bean curd 454g (tofu) and chilli bean curd 454g (tofu) in sesame oil with chilli originated from China via The Netherlands.

The FSA said that the glass jar products had been distributed widely throughout the UK but admitted it didn’t know yet at what locations.

Dates affected include 30 December 2013, 30 June 2014 and 30 December 2014.

It said the levels of the bacteria detected can cause vomiting or diarrhoea and advised that the product be withdrawn from sale and destroyed.

Tofu contamination

“The agency has now received further information confirming that other lots of tofu from the same Chinese producer are contaminated with high levels of Bacillus cereus.

“Based on the findings, the Dutch importer Liroy B.V. is recalling all the tofu products they have imported this year from the Chinese producer,” the agency said in an update.

“The Dutch importer will contact all their customers regarding withdrawing all other rose bean curd tofu and chilli bean curd tofu as a precaution.”

Original recall

The original recall on 20 December, due to contamination with Bacillus Cereus and several different yeast varieties, was issued from Dutch importer Liroy B.V.

“Local authorities are being asked to identify and make contact with relevant retailers in their area who may sell the implicated product,” said the FSA.

“If these products are found during the course of their investigations, enforcement officers should ensure that the specific lot code and best before date are withdrawn from sale and destroyed.”

EU-wide

The European Commission’s recall portal listed Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands and Sweden as the distribution countries.

The notification was made from Finland with results of >100000 CFU/g for Bacillus Cereus and 3900 CFU/g for high count of yeasts with sampling dates of 5 December.
