3M E. coli O157 assay recognized as official testing method

3M’s Molecular Detection Assay 2 - E. coli O157 (including H7) has been granted First Action status by AOAC International.

The assay was introduced in April 2016 and the firm has evaluated it with Buffered Peptone Water.

Approval for becoming an Official Method involves review by independent laboratories and an expert panel.

Recommended industries include dairy, fruits and vegetables, meat, poultry and eggs, prepared and processed foods and seafood.

All assays can be run simultaneously and up to 96 samples can be tested in each run.

It has ready-to-use and pre-dispensed reagents and colour-coded assay tubes by organism with matching software screens.

Adriana Robayo Nino, global pathogen manager with 3M Food Safety, said: “AOAC recognition of the 3M Molecular Detection Assay 2 - E. coli O157 (including H7) emphasizes the value of a pathogen detection solution that is fast, accurate and reduces the risk of releasing products contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 which can lead to disease outbreaks.

The 3M Molecular Detection System was introduced in 2011 and the firm claims it is used by food processors, labs, universities and government agencies in over 40 countries.

Compared to first generation tests, the assay processing time is 30% faster and instrument run time is one hour for ​E. coli ​O157.
