Diageo Canada is recalling some batches of Smirnoff Ice because of the possibility they may contain small fragments of glass.

Diageo says it has issued the voluntary recall because its quality assurance process detected problems with some bottles, “that could cause small glass fragments to break off and fall inside.”

A statement from the company says: “In an abundance of caution, Diageo Canada is recalling all of the [specified] lot codes, although the company believes significantly less than 1% of these bottles are impacted.

"The company has not received any reports from consumers relating to the impacted bottles.”

The voluntary recall affects 330ml glass bottles across 34 lots, with products affected including Smirnoff Ice, Smirnoff Ice Light, Smirnoff Ice Peach Bellini, and Smirnoff Ice Cranberry & Lime.

Products had been distributed nationwide as individual bottles or in 4-packs and 12-packs.

The recall was initiated after Diageo raised concerns about bottles sourced from a third-party glass manufacturer.

The alcoholic beverages giant has notified the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), and the agency is conducting a food safety investigation to ascertain if other products should be recalled.

Diageo is also working with its broker and customers to remove all potentially impacted bottles from retail.

It adds it is working with the glass manufacturer to resolve the production issue.

The recall was initiated on Friday (September 4) ahead of the long weekend in Canada.

Smirnoff Ice is a RTD variant of Diageo’s Smirnoff vodka. The recall affects products purchased on or after July 24 with specific codes.
