HorizonScan has been launched in five territories in partnership with the Global ID Group.

North American, German, Brazilian and Mexican companies will be able to access the food safety and integrity tracking system from Fera Science.

In Q1 2016, HorizonScan data showed that nuts and nut products and seeds saw the highest increase in integrity issues compared to same period in 2015 – a 40.4% increase in reported problems.

Other commodities which saw big jumps in reported incidents included a 26.6% increase in issues with herbs and spices and a 12.8% increase in problems with poultry and poultry products.

Dr Miles Thomas, from Fera Science, said: “The system provides a vital snapshot of food safety and integrity issues currently impacting the global supply chain, allowing the industry and other stakeholders to track and react to issues in real time, as they emerge.”

HorizonScan gathers information from more than 70 national inspection agencies, involving over 490 food commodities from 180 countries. Its reports are updated daily and contain over 63,000 incidents archived over the last 15 years.

It enables manufacturers, distributors, retailers and related industries to track and monitor a range of contaminant and authenticity supplier issues.

Ron Stakland, Global ID’s VP of business development and product manager for HorizonScan, said it gives food safety managers a new risk assessment tool.

“It gives subscribers a way to “scan the horizon” of the global food commodity landscape, enhancing their ability to identify and avoid potential hazards.”
