Neogen Corporation has developed an AOAC-validated test to detect Campylobacter.

ANSR for Campylobacter is the fifth test available for the ANSR pathogen detection system and provides results after 18 minutes of reaction time following sample preparation.

It provides rapid recovery and detection of Campylobacter in food or environmental samples in 20–24 hours. Sensitivity is 1 cfu/analytical unit and 102 cfu/mL post enrichment.

The AOAC validation study found the performance of ANSR for Campylobacter equivalent to the USDA-FSIS/MLG reference method.

Effectiveness of aerobic enrichment

Ed Bradley, Neogen’s vice president of food safety, said the validation verifies the effectiveness of using an aerobic enrichment when testing for Campylobacter.

“Traditional testing for the bacteria with microaerophilic enrichments can be very challenging, and lead to false negative results by killing any existing viable Campylobacter,” he said.

“This introduction of ANSR for Campylobacter extends our ANSR product offering for the bacterial pathogens of greatest concern to the food industry, and will be very easy for laboratories to adopt, as it follows the same procedure of all our other ANSR kits.”

The test joins Neogen’s line of ANSR products, which includes AOAC Research Institute-validated tests for Salmonella, Listeria, Listeria monocytogenes and E. coli O157:H7.

The kit contains 96 reaction tubes and caps, three lysis reagent bottles, 60 mL lysis reagent suspension buffer and 96 lysis tubes.

ANSR for Campylobacter Enrichment Broth and Buffered Peptone Water are required.

Internal and independent lab studies using chicken carcass rinse and turkey carcass sponge samples showed it was an effective alternative for detection of Campylobacter jejuni, Campylobacter lari and Campylobacter coli after 20 to 24 hours of enrichment in an aerobic or micro-aerobic atmosphere.

Protein test to judge cleanliness

Neogen has also developed a protein test for determining the cleanliness of food contact surfaces and equipment.

AccuClean Advanced neogen
AccuClean Advanced

AccuClean Advanced is a 10-second visual test that reveals detected protein residue through a color change and has a protein detection limit of 15 μg/mL.

Rob Soule said it was perfect for companies that want a quick indication of the effectiveness of their sanitation processes without the use of an instrument.

“There is simply no easier, less expensive, or reliable method of quickly and accurately measuring protein residues on a surface than AccuClean Advanced.”

AccuClean Advanced determines cleanliness by detecting protein residues left behind from previously processed food and liquids.

It contains reagents in the cartridge that once activated, change color to indicate the relative level of protein detected on a sampled surface.

If no protein is detected, the solution in the bottom of the cup will remain copper-colored to indicate the surface is clean.

A color change to gray indicates low level protein has been detected, while a change to green/blue or blue indicates a higher level of protein detected.

DCM product line

Neogen has added to its line of dehydrated culture media (DCM) products to simplify preparing culture media for use.

Neogen’s presterilized Acumedia EZ Prep pouched products eliminate the need to weigh and autoclave.

EZ Prep pouches offered include Buffered Peptone Water (BPW) premeasured for use with 25g samples and Tryptic Soy Broth (TSB) premeasured for use with 375g samples.

Neogen’s John Guenther said the media is presterilized through irradiation to eliminate the need for autoclaving, handling of hot liquids and the risk of contamination.

“We chose BPW and TSB as the first products in the line because of their widespread use in food safety testing. But, EZ Prep pouches can be used for a variety of enrichment formulations and virtually any of Acumedia’s more than 400 formulations - if sufficient volumes are requested.”

For bulk media users, Neogen has pre-measured and sterilized Lab M μPREP dehydrated culture media bags that enable preparation of 20 liters of media at a time.

To prepare μPrep media, you lay out the bag, fill with sterile water, and agitate to mix.

Neogen’s 20-liter media bags include μPrep Buffered Peptone Water (ISO) and μPrep Demi Fraser Broth (ISO).
