New food safety initiative in Asia welcomed

27-Nov-2008

The US Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) has welcomed moves to improve food safety in Asia Pacific with the launch of the APEC Partnership Training Institute Network.

The new initiative, launched by the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum aims to increase regulatory capacity and unite public and private sector representatives, as well as scientific experts, to improve food safety in the region.

GMA senior vice president, Robert Brackett, said: “Food safety is a key concern for GMA and its member companies, and we are pleased to see that APEC has taken such a constructive and practical approach to the issue.

“This initiative, in helping build regulatory capacity in food safety, will help government, industry and other key stakeholders work together to better assure the safety of the food supply chain in the Asia Pacific.”

The network will provide assistance to APEC Member Economies to improve regulator and manufacturer technical competence and understanding of food safety management.

It also aligns with GMA’s Four Pillars plan to improve the safety of food imports.
