Portable thermometer extends user's reach

A new portable thermometer has an extendable cable, which allows temperatures to be taken in harder to reach places, its manufacturer claims.

Control Company's Traceable Kangaroo thermometer carries the 107cm (42 inch) probe cable in a reel-compartment pouch inside the case of the unit.

Processors are investing in portable temperature measurement equipment. This helps them comply with hygiene analysis and critical control point (HACCP) procedures increasingly enforced worldwide.

These procedures require processors to continually take temperature and other environment readings that can affect the quality and safety of food.

The stainless steel probe, measuring 19cm (7.5 inch) in length, is resistant to most chemicals, the manufacturer claims.

Intuitive operation allows users to record identical results, claims the company.

The thermometer has a detection range of -50.0 to 300C (-58.0 to 572F), and displays results at a resolution of 0.1 between temperatures of -19.9 to 199.9 degrees. Accuracy is to one degree between temperatures of -30 to 250C (-22 to 482F), while readings taken outside this range are accurate to within two degree.

Units can be set to automatically capture and recall minimum and maximum temperature readings over any time period, claims the manufacturer. High and low alarms may be programmed in one degree increments. On activation, the alarm sounds every minute until the temperature returns to non-alarm condition.

A hold button freezes the display to record a current reading. Large digits are readable from 6m (20 feet) away.

The device has a built-in stand with a footprint of 29 square cm (4 ½ square inches).

Each device comes with an individually serial-numbered traceable certificate, which is provided from the manufacturer's ISO 17025 calibration laboratory accredited by A2LA. It indicates traceability to standards provided by National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

Units are supplied with silver-oxide battery, which runs continuously for 1 year, the manufacturer claims.
