The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has stretched its regulatory muscle through suspending the licence of two firms.

The licence to operate for Aliments Pasta-Mer, in Dorval, was revoked on 13 June and for Aliya’s Foods from 17 June.

No products have been recalled but should any potentially contaminated items be identified, the CFIA said it will take immediate action.

Corrective actions

Aliments Pasta-Merhas been federally registered since February 2013 and will not have their license reinstated until they have fully implemented the necessary corrective actions as approved by the agency.

The CFIA determined that adequate controls for food safety have not been reliably implemented in the facility on a consistent basis, specifically, with regards to steps in the cooling process.

This requirement is clearly stated as part of the Quality Management Program (QMP) for the establishment.

Aliya’s Foods suspension

Meanwhile, Aliya’s Foods is a ready-to-eat red meat and poultry establishment located in Edmonton, Alberta.

The suspension is a result of non-compliance with the Meat Inspection Regulations, said the agency.

Aliya’s Foods failed to document and address product cooling issues during pre-shipment review, and failed to address allergen control issues.

The firm said since the suspension of production they had revised all records and implemented an automated verification system to provide a second check.

Aliya’s Foods will not be able to resume operations until the company has fully implemented the necessary corrective actions as approved by the CFIA and the agency is fully confident in the plant’s capacity to effectively manage food safety risks.

“We are very diligent in adhering to the processes set out by CFIA and are always mindful of their recommendations and rulings,” said president Noorduni Jiwani.

“We do not want our customers to misunderstand this suspension as a lack of care for these policies and for the safety of our customers.”

Licenses and registrations of registered establishments or companies can be suspended or cancelled for failing to comply with relevant CFIA Acts and Regulations.
