The Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition’s priorities for the coming year include cutting foodborne illness and speeding up recalls.
CFSAN, a division of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) , works to ensure food products and cosmetics distributed in America are safe for consumption and labelled properly. The center has released its 2013-14 road map, which outline its priorities as it pursues science-based methods to protect public health.
The plan consists of several steps, including reducing foodborne illness and injury rates, establishing smart and effective regulations, and increasing compliance with preventive control standards across the supply chain. Other priorities include developing strategies to promote healthful diets, and speeding up the process in removing harmful products from the market.
According to the agency, most of the general goals and specific milestones are part of a two-year plan. However, agency leaders realize some of the more complex goals might require a longer mission to accomplish.
