The UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) is calling for help to identify the sources of Listeria in a bid to reduce the risk to humans.
There are about 180 cases of listeriosis reported each year, said the agency.
The work will sequence the genomes of clinical isolates of confirmed Listeria monocytogenes collected in the UK with possible source isolates from a range of food.
The information will assist the Listeria Risk Management Programme in aiming to examine whether the source of listeriosis can be attributed, based on genome sequencing.
Tenders for the research should be submitted by 5pm on Monday 21 October using the agency’s electronic procurement system.
