The UK Food Standards Agency has issued a research call on brominated flame retardants (BFRs) due a lack of information about their effect on food.
BFRs are a group of chemical compounds added to furniture, textiles and building materials to delay the onset of fire but they have been found to not prevent fire and may make a fire more toxic.
Due to widespread use, BFRs are everywhere in the environment and have entered the food chain.
The research call follows a European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) opinion due to the very limited information on occurrence, exposure and toxicity.
Applications should be submitted online by 5pm on 10 January 2013
