Horse meat has been found in lasagne
The European Free Trade Association (EFTA) is holding a meeting Thursday to discuss the horse meat controversy.
EFTA Veterinary and Phytosanitary Committee will assess the situation in Norway and Iceland and propose a control plan to examine possible fraudulent practices.
The plan, which lasts for one month and with an extension option of another two months, will investigate the possible presence of unlabelled horse meat in foods marketed as containing beef and testing one sample for every 50 tons of horse meat for residues of phenylbutazone (bute).
The plan also provides for reporting of the results of the controls in Norway and Iceland to the Authority, including information on sampling, type of analysis and follow-up controls.
For positive findings related to horsemeat, the country where the animals concerned were certified for slaughter will also be reported.
