The British Retail Consortium (BRC) has launched a new online
global standards directory that provides details of BRC-certified
food, packaging and consumer product suppliers.

The consortium claims that the directory is a user-friendly searchable database that should guarantee a minimum standard of service. The launch coincides with the recent trend towards ever-tighter regulation and accountability within the food industry.

Suppliers who achieve the BRC required certification standard can list all the details of their business in the searchable database. This includes links to their websites, the ability to e-mail the supplier directly, a copy of the standard certificate in a printable PDF format and an online street map.

"In the past there was no central database where retailers and consumers could find out who met the required BRC certificated standards," said Kevin Hawkins, BRC director general.

"Our unique global standards directory is a 24/7 virtual business directory and is the only freely accessible information on BRC certificated organisations. The potential for exposure to global retailers is huge."

The BRC's benchmark for food safety management, the Food Standard has been extensively revised for 2005. Changes included in the new 2005 edition include traceability of food components through the supply chain, ensuring that food components remain uncontaminated by other elements - important when allergens labelling becomes a statutory requirement next year and ensuring that guidelines governing various processes in the manufacture of food products are sufficiently robust.

Suppliers in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, the Far East, Australasia, North and South America currently use the standard, which will come into effect by 1st July 2005.

A listing in the BRC global standards directory costs £75 (+VAT) per annum for the initial registration, which includes one site/location. The annual BRC says that subscription fee covers all directory administration, including data entry, storage, back up and archive.

It also provides suppliers with exclusive use of the BRC certificated food, packaging or consumer products logo, which can be used on all collateral.

The BRC estimates it will have over 2,000 suppliers signed up by the end of 2005. The directory can be found by clicking here.
