Charm Sciences’ aerobic count bacterial test has received AOAC-Research Institute approval.

The Peel Plate AC (Aerobic Count) microbial test is for use by microbiological laboratories, farmers, milk processors and water municipalities.

Using traditional standard plate count formulation with red producing TTC enzyme substrate, aerobic bacteria produce red spots that are quantified over 24-48 hours of incubation and are used as spoilage and hygienic indicators by food manufacturers.

The Peel Plate AC test is a dried medium in a shallow 47mm plate that automatically diffuses a liquid sample when added to the plate, and, like conventional plates, allows for picking of cultured organisms for further identification.

Bob Salter, vice president of regulatory and industrial affairs, said: “The Peel Plate methods perform comparably to traditional microbial methods which have led to their rapid performance verifications by AOAC-RI and National Conference of Interstate Milk Shippers laboratories since April 2015.” 

It is the second AOAC-RI approval in less than a month, following backing for its Peel Plate traditional microbial tests for coliforms/E. coli detection in dairy, food products, contact surfaces and water. 

The Peel Plate EC (E. coli/coliform) test was awarded Performance Test Method Status by AOAC Research Institute for total coliform in dairy products tested at 32°C and for E. coli and coliform detection in water, surface rinses and ground meat, eggs, chocolate and dry dog food tested at 35 °C.
