The Global Food Safety Initiative has reissued its Guidance Document Sixth Edition under version 6.3 to include requirements related to the storage and distribution sector.

It means company food safety management schemes that cover these areas can achieve GFSI recognition through its benchmarking process.

Members of the Benchmark Committee include Vince Craig, managing director, Meadowbrae Technical Services, Gys Greeff, supplier quality manager at The Coca Cola Company and Vanessa Broadnax, corporate brands integrity manager, Fresh at Ahold.

Recognized scheme

The GFSI Board is committed to providing a healthy selection of effective food safety management schemes extending across the food supply chain, so that facilities have access to a recognized scheme that suits the scope of their operations,” said Yves Rey, corporate quality general manager, Danone and chair of the GFSI Board.

The widespread acceptance of the GFSI recognized schemes means that the GFSI benchmarking process is critical to building confidence in third party certification and reassuring buying companies that consistent audit results are achieved across all schemes.”

The re-benchmarking exercise against the GFSI Guidance Document Sixth Edition represents a significant change from the previous approach against the Fifth Edition because it covers primary production and processing and supports on-going activities in a more robust way.

BRC Global Standard

Talking about V6.3 for the BRC Global Standard for Food Safety for packaging and packaging materials, David Brackston, technical director, BRC, said it was pleased the guidance document had been re-benchmarked.

The BRC/IOP Packaging Standard has become the first Standard dedicated to the safe production of packaging materials to gain GFSI recognition,” he added.

Benchmarking application

This provides added value and recognition to the large number of BRC/IOP packaging certificated sites who have worked hard over the years to achieve the demands of their customers.”
