Anti-microbaterial pens make an entrance in food sector

The emphasis on food safety in the plant has led one company to see
a market for pens that inhibit bacterial build-up.

European consumers have become increasing concerned about food safety, mainly due to the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) scare in cattle beginning in the late 1980s, a foot and mouth diseaseoutbreak in 2001 and of avian flu in 2003 and this year.

Consumer concerns have in turn led to tougher regulatory action and increased survelliance of safety in food processing plants.

E- Components & Chains, based in Pocklington UK has launched two styles of its anti-microbial pens for the food industry. They are meant to help plant floor workers from crosscontaminating food products while doing their jobs.

The new pens feature housings made from impact-resistant polypropylene, which is approved for food contact. The pens also contain an additive that inhibits bacteria build-up with protective barrierthat reforms even after cleaning.

E-Components says the barrier's protection lasts the lifetime of product. The pens are available in retractable and non-retractable versions in a selection of colour inks, including blue, black,and red.
