The European Union has lifted or eased import restrictions on meat from Lithuania and South Africa.

Brussels yesterday withdrew protection measures on live pigs, pork and pork products from Lithuania following an outbreak of Classical Swine Fever in the Eastern European country this summer.

The ban was lifted after Lithuanian authorities provided proof that all the necessary checks had been completed.

The European Commission also agreed to reduce restrictions from South Africa to one part of the Western Cape Province – following outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza of the H5N2 subtype (not the Asiatic"H5N1) in April.

Following these outbreaks, the imports of live ostriches, their eggs, ostrich meat and meat products from the whole of South Africa was outlawed.

But following action from South African authorities to limited the disease to the one province, EU Member States can import ostrich meat from South Africa's other eight provinces.
