China launches campaign to strengthen food safety
China has launched a week-long campaign to promote honesty in the food industry in an effort to strengthen food safety and rebuild the “integrity” of the sector.

As part of the campaign, which has received backing from Vice-premier Li Keqiang, government departments will hold events to showcase their efforts, and food manufacturers will be schooled on relevant regulations to increase their awareness and credibility.

In a written set of instruction, Li urged relevant bodies to showcase their work in an effort to build a long-term food safety system and improve honestly in the food industry.

He also urged the strict punishment of those involved in food safety crimes.

In the same week, a senior food safety official in Shanghai has called for harsher penalties to prevent repeat food safety cases.
