African Union to establish FSA
The African Union (AU) is to establish a food safety authority (FSA) and a Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) to avoid foodborne illness.

The body held a two day workshop this week to draft the proposal of a food safety authority, draft and RASFF and to propose a road map for implementation.

Participants included Codex contacts point people and food safety managers from Members States governments, representatives of Regional Economic Communities and the African Union Commission.

The aim was to re-affirm the need, objectives, structure and functionality of a Food Safety Authority within the AUC to increase market access for food and agricultural products and raise production levels and improve public health.
