US software firm CAT Squared has partnered Janam Technologies to launch food safety data analysis software that can be used with a handheld mobile device for added convenience.

CAT Squared, which is based in Conway, Arkansas, specialises in IT tools and services for the food industry. The Food Safety and Total Quality Management package, otherwise known as Hazard Analysis Tool (HAT) aims to provide users with consistent, reliable and provable information that is easy to use.

Janam’s XM mobile computers are certified for use with HAT, which focuses on controlling processes for maintaining food safety and quality standards and ensuring no failures or oversights occur in procedures.

In particular the Janam XM66AM and XM60+AM are tailored for use in food production areas, with both units entirely encased in an antimicrobial coating.

Comfort, speed and weight

The lightweight devices incorporate large 3.5 inch screens to make them easy to read and are designed to fit easily into the hand. "Rugged handheld computers are only valuable if workers use them," said Harry Lerner, Janam's chief executive. "Comfort, speed and weight matter.”

CAT Squared’s software can also be used on touchscreen, handheld or mobile computers.

The system allows all data to be reviewed in real-time, including failure ranking reports, pre-shipment review and compliance. It can also be easily laid out in chart and graph format and analysed using lean management tools such as Six Sigma.

Prove traceability

Information can be used to analyse loss, track root causes of problems and prove traceability, from receipt to consumer.

The system can be configured to suit a company’s individual food safety and quality principles, from hazard analysis critical control points (HACCP) to US Department of Agriculture and Food & Drug Administration standards.

The software can record data on factory floor issues ranging from weight, size, temperature and defects to perform yield and retention.
