Two additional salmon ID tests launched by InstantLabs
InstantLabs has added two additional salmon identification tests to allow distributors, processors and government regulators to positively identify the species in less than two hours.

The tests – for Chinook (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) and Sockeye (Oncorhynchus nerka) – allow InstantLabs to offer species identification for the four most popular salmon.

The firm has previously launched kits for Atlantic (Salmo salar) and Coho Salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch).

Developed with the University of Guelph, the test kits will be offered as part of the InstantID Species product line.

Steven Guterman, InstantLabs CEO, said the tests help serve a greater customer base within the global seafood industry.

“We believe the speed and simplicity of our system will protect consumers, help processors and combat the accelerating international problem of seafood fraud.”

The company’s offerings include tests for Atlantic Blue Crab (Callinectes sapidus) and US Catfish (Ictalurus species), as well as for pork (Sus scrofa) and horse (Equus species) identification.

The Hunter system is a portable real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) platform for DNA detection. The kits are available on the Hunter platform or other PCR instruments.
