915 Labs and Printpack to present MATS technology

A Thai university is hosting a conference to introduce a method for packaging foods and beverages called Microwave Assisted Thermal Sterilization (MATS).

Kasetsart University will hold the event at 9am on January 25 in the Agro-Industry Building #2 in Chatuchak, Bangkok.

MATS processing and packaging is a technology by 915 Labs that sterilizes and pasteurizes food and beverages.

By shortening the time food is exposed to high heat, microwave processing preserves nutrients, texture and taste and eliminates the need for artificial additives and excess sodium.

Sirichai Songsermpong, Kasetsart Universityassistant professor will introduce the seminar speakers from 915 Labs and Printpack, which offers customized packaging for MATS.

Kevin Petersen, VP of business development for 915 Labs, said: “Both Kasetsart and Thai food companies are interested in exploring how MATS can help them achieve higher quality, more nutritious food to distribute within the country and to export.”

Topics covered will include “MATS 101: The Science of Microwave Food Processing,” “Microwave Processing Food Possibilities” and “MATS Packaging.”

Participants will also be able to taste MATS-produced foods.

915 Labs will also begin producing a MAPS-only system in 2017. Microwave Assisted Pasturerisation (MAPS) technology operates with lower temperatures and shorter heating times for pasturerisation.

Packaged foods and beverages are heated simultaneously with hot water and microwave energy to a temperature of 70-90°C for two to 10 minutes, eliminating pathogens.

Vivek Chougule, business development manager in Asia and managing director in India with Printpack, said packaging plays an important role in the MATS process.

“This technology was developed with the consumer experience as the focus and Printpack has been involved from the beginning to design packaging that delivers the right combination of functionality, product protection and convenience.”

The day will include a tour of the Kasetsart University’s microwave R&D Lab and an opportunity for food companies to meet with representatives of 915 Labs and Printpack.
