Promega Corporation has launched a kit that offers food safety labs an automated DNA purification method for PCR-based testing of food pathogens.

The Maxwell RSC PureFood Pathogen Kit builds on the company’s growing offering for food testing laboratories. It is not for diagnostic use.

The kit does not require enzymatic pre-treatment and, when used with the Maxwell RSC Instrument, can purify DNA from one to 16 food matrix samples in 40 minutes.

Promega said the kit is an automated protocol with few steps and little hands-on time for technicians.

It has been validated for the purification of gram negative and gram positive bacterial DNA in one workflow from different food samples including E. coli O157:H7, Salmonella enterica and Listeria monocytogenes.

The automated workflow provides DNA purification and allows labs to isolate pathogen DNA from small food sample types and still get enough for downstream analysis.

Chris Moreland, Promega global product manager, said: “We spent a lot of time collaborating with food testing labs to really understand their frustrations and their desire to reduce the potential of human error and eliminate the need for multiple purification SOPs and protocols.”
