Metrohm has acquired Innovative Photonic Solutions (IPS) to expand in Raman spectroscopy.

The firm said the deal contributes to growth by enhancing capabilities to develop its portfolio of handheld Raman systems.

John Connolly, CEO of IPS, said it will broader distribution channels and bring stronger financial backing.

IPS is one of the largest producers of Raman spectroscopy diode-based light components supplying the majority of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in the marketplace.

Dieter Strohm, EVP and CTO at Metrohm, added that IPS will continue to operate as before reporting to Metrohm HQ in Switzerland.

Metrohm is a maker of instruments for chemical analysis and its portfolio includes NIR and Raman spectroscopy, software and dosing systems for laboratory automation.

The firm is owned by the Swiss Metrohm foundation and represented in more than 120 countries by subsidiaries or exclusive distributors.

Metrohm USA also recently opened its new headquarters in Riverview, Florida. The firm welcomed Tampa employees to the 90,000 square foot facility.

The building includes training facilities for customers and employees, application development laboratories, technical and customer support areas and a 25,000 square foot warehouse.

“This new facility demonstrates our commitments as we invest in providing our customers with innovative training facilities and our employees with modern and collaborative work areas,” said Edward Colihan, president and CEO of Metrohm USA.

Printed SERS substrates

Meanwhile, Metrohm Raman bought Diagnostic anSERS inc late last year.

Dr Wei Yu, co-owner of Diagnostic anSERS and inventor of printed SERS substrates, joined the Metrohm Raman team.

A subsidiary of Metrohm AG, Metrohm Raman is a manufacturer of handheld Raman spectrometers based in Laramie, Wyoming.

The acquisition expands capabilities of Mira Raman analyzers from instant materials identification to trace chemical analysis.

Dr Keith Carron, CEO of Metrohm Raman, said: “The P-SERS platform is perfect for detection of non-visible amounts of materials that are undetectable without SERS enhancement."

Dr Yu’s substrates, combined with Metrohm Raman’s Raman detectors and software algorithms can be used for field detection of trace analytes.

Metrohm Raman will begin offering SERS substrates with the release of the Mira DS in early 2018.
