Constellation Brands' beer brand president says the company is 'troubled' by a recall of some bottles of Corona Extra on sale in the US due to they risk they might contain small glass particles.

Constellation's Chicago-based beer division said on last Friday that its voluntary recall applies to 12oz clear bottles of Corona Extra in six-packs, 12-packs and 18-packs with specific production codes.

"This recall comes after routine inspections in the company’s quality control laboratory detected defects in certain bottles that could cause small particles of glass to break off and fall into the bottle," Constellation said in a statement.

"The affected bottles came from one of four glass plants run by a third-party manufacturer, which supplies the company the bottles. While the company believes that less than 1 percent of the bottles produced from the plant may be affected, it is recalling select packages that may contain defective bottles to ensure the safety of consumers.

No reports of injuries as of last Friday

As of August 15 the company said it had received no reports of injuries resulting from the affected bottles.

Bill Hackett, President of Constellation Brands Beer Division, said: "We are troubled by this development and are working proactively with our distributors, retailers and consumers to resolve this situation as quickly as possible.

“Throughout its history, Corona Extra is a brand that has been synonymous with quality, consistency and refreshment. Our entire organization, including our brewers, our production team, and all our employees across our system, is absolutely committed to doing everything possible to complete this recall quickly, and ensure the safety of our consumers and integrity of our product.”

Constellation signs deal with Vitro to meet 25-30% of glass needs

Constellation said it was working closely with distributors and retailers to minimize the impact on consumers, and is working to recover potentially affected products.

Consumers who have bought beer with the affected production codes can visit the Corona website to get instructions on a refund.

Also on August 15, Constellation said it was in the process of "finalizing a comprehensive, optimal glass sourcing strategy" for its beer business, and had just entered into a long-term supply agreement with Vitro to meet 25-30% of its glass needs as "one part of the company's evolving glass strategy".

Constellation did not respond to a request for comment.
