E.coli outbreak in the US linked to spinach
A blend of spinach and spring mix has been linked to an outbreak of E.coli O157:H7 which has so far sickened 16 people.

The product, from State Garden, is supplied to Wegmans Food Markets and all cases have been reported in New York State.

Wegmans issued the recall of 31,000lbs of Wegmans Organic Spinach and Spring Mix sold in 5 oz. and 11 oz. clam shell packages in the produce department of its stores.

Test results indicate that only product with a use-by-date of 23 October is connected to the reported illnesses but the firm has recalled dates from 14 October to 1 November.

Wegmans said it has worked closely with the New York State Department of Health and Department of Agriculture and Markets since learning that illnesses may be associated with the product.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is currently investigating and will make an announcement after it has conducted further tests.

Packaging contamination

In a separate incident the supermarket is also recalling all code dates of Wegmans Pumpkin Roll (sold in the Bakery) between 1 September and 30 October as they main contain pieces of plastic.

The products may contain pieces of clear plastic from the packaging, which may be sharp or could present a choking hazard, said the chain.

The recall was initiated following complaints by customers who found the plastic pieces and affects the whole roll, 21oz half roll, 10oz and two slices, 6oz.

It follows a similar incident last month after Rudi's Organic Bakery, Inc. initiated a voluntary product withdrawal due to the possible presence of metallic foreign objects in select products or product packaging.

Products withdrawn from the market include Rudi's Organic Bakery Multigrain Oat Bread, Rudi's Organic Bakery Colorado Cracked Wheat Bread, and Rudi's Organic Bakery Cinnamon Raisin Bread.
