Revision for ISO 22000 on food safety management systems has reached Draft International Standard (DIS) stage.

The DIS is available to ISO members for public consultation and vote until 3 July. Publication is expected by June 2018.

The new version will distinguish between risk at the operational level (through the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) approach) and risk at strategic level of the management system (business risk).

Terms such as Critical Control Points (CCPs), Operational Prerequisite Programmes (OPRPs) and Prerequisite Programmes (PRPs) will be clarified.

It will also clarify the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle, by having two separate cycles working together: one covering the management system and the other covering principles of HACCP.

Experts met three times in 2016 and processed 1,800 comments from stakeholders in a range of positions.

Vincent Doumeizel, Lloyd's Register’s VP for food and sustainability, said: “Food has one of the most complex supply chains in the world so it is great to see that the revisions to ISO 22000 will address the changing needs of the sector.

“We understand that the requirements around communication are being strengthened and we support this as a way of identifying and controlling food safety risks at all stages in the chain.”
